    Description

    Hello!
I recently restored my TC-D5M and man is it nice!!
But, to get there, I had to source parts from three units (including the one I restored). I also found some NOS parts, which are VERY hard to find now! One
    impossible
to find part, is the absolutely necessary replacement for the original felt washer on the capstan. There should be
    three
washers (two plastic and one felt- see the second picture) and once installed the "end float" of the capstan shaft is to be set (per the overhaul manual) to nearly zero movement- you can't feel it move when set correctly.
I searched high and low for a suitable replacement, and felt washers THIS small are impossible to find. But, since it's the 21st century, we have high-tech oil impregnated plastic to replace it! AND, it's better, because it DOES NOT crush or wear out! Fully compatible with todays fully synthetic lubricants (Either spindle oil, such as one I will have available soon) or watch mechanism oil.
It may be possible to remove one of the (probably) remaining two plastic washers on your capstan assembly. Really this is a part for an experienced technician to install, but if you have the high-accuracy measurement tools, and the ability to use them, you can do this. A drop of synthetic oil before final assembly and the W&F readings will be as good, or better, than original specs. This solution works better than expected.
DO I need this thing for mine?
It seems to work fine? Well, if you open the tape door, and (with no tape in there) grab the capstan shaft with your finger and pull it up. If it comes up, really if it's moving other than rotation, it needs adjustment at least, but in every one of the three I've had, they all were completely missing the felt washer. You will feel the shaft come up and then go back down easily if you need this. If it doesn't? You don't need this. Lucky!
Note that if the shaft is moving up/down, then the tape can be skewed across the head. During playback, this is simply annoying, although it can damage the tape. During recording, it will cause the tracks to be out of alignment, and the recording will not be useable. AND it can damage the tape during recording too. If you care about your D5, make sure it's right. OR, always leave it resting on it's back (tape door facing up) and do not move it while playing or recording. Makes it less "portable" but you won't wreck your tape at least.
As I've been restoring mine for a while now (a year now maybe?) I know this is a part you are
    not
going to find anywhere else. Sony scrapped all their spare cassette parts in the 90's.
Every one of my (three!) donor decks were bad, so chances are, that yours is too..
Check my other auctions for the UNOBTANIUM head shims and mount screw, as well as many other parts. I'm clearing the bench off, so take a look!
I think that does it, but if you have questions, feel free to ask. I included  pictures, so hopefully you can see everything you want to see on it. The capstan/flywheel assembly is shown for reference only, and only the small oil impregnated washer, indicated by the green arrow, is included in this auction. (the capstan may be available in another auction).
