About the artist
In 1963, when he was well beyond school age, Tanaka started his career. What lured Tanaka into the arts was his love of etching. Unlike many of his peers, Tanaka knew what he wanted to depict - the world from which he came.
An unsurpassed etching artist, Ryohei is recognized as one of the most important contemporary etching masters of Japan. His minutely accurate etchings focus on thatched-roof farmhouses and threadlike tree branches that are quickly disappearing from the Japanese landscape. Human figures play almost no part in Tanaka’s works, but they are implied at every turn. Their absence, along with his color selection of umber, blacks, white and greenish gray tones provide a sense of quiet and distance.
Ryohei finds inspiration in the seasonal changes, idyllic villages, bamboo groves, rice paddies and the narrow country lanes of rural Japan.
Tanaka is such a common name in Japan that he prefers to sign himself with his first name - Ryohei. His wonderfully detailed prints easily convey the artist’s heartfelt love of traditional Japanese life. He says about his work “I want to share Japan’s quiet and peaceful countryside with you.”
Over one of several dinners together, he shared with me what drives him as an artist - he hopes his prints “will convey beauty, pleasure and peace of mind for you.”
